Anita Denise Baker is an American singer-songwriter who was born on January 26, 1958. She was reared in Detroit, Michigan, despite being an Ohio native. When Anita was born, her biological mother, who was just 16 years old, abandoned her and left her in the care of a lady who has alternately been referred to as a friend or a relative. When Anita was a child, her foster mother, Mary Lewis, instilled in her the values of hard labor and faith.

Anita began singing in her church choir at the age of 12. She learned the truth about her past when she was 13 years old, following the death of her foster mother.
