Anita Baker Bio And Career:
Anita Denise Baker is an American singer-songwriter who was born on January 26, 1958. She was reared in Detroit, Michigan, despite being an Ohio native. When Anita was born, her biological mother, who was just 16 years old, abandoned her and left her in the care of a lady who has alternately been referred to as a friend or a relative. When Anita was a child, her foster mother, Mary Lewis, instilled in her the values of hard labor and faith.
Anita began singing in her church choir at the age of 12. She learned the truth about her past when she was 13 years old, following the death of her foster mother. Lois Landry, this younger adopted sister, reared Anita after that. Anita was approached by bassist David Washington when she was 16 years old, and after a successful audition for the band Chapter 8, she spent the following several years performing in and around Detroit until signing with the Ariola record company. In 1979, the quartet issued their debut and sole album.
Anita returned to Detroit and took a job as a receptionist at a law office after Chapter 8’s contract with the Los Angeles-based Ariola label expired when it was acquired by Arista Records. She was persuaded to return to the music industry in 1982 by a former Ariola employee who had founded the independent label Beverly Glen Music.
Anita moved back to Los Angeles where she recorded The Songstress, her debut solo album, which was released in 1983. The R&B/Jazz record was only a moderate success at first, but over several years, it finally sold over 300,000 copies in total. Mostly as a result of the top-charting single “Angel,” which debuted at No. 12 on the R&B albums chart. Anita signed a contract with Elektra Records after leaving the Beverly Glen label in 1984, and it was at this time that she rose to fame.
Anita released four albums between the middle of the 1980s and the middle of the 1990s, each of which produced a number of top-charting singles. These singles included “Sweet Love” and “Caught Up in the Rapture” from her 1986 sophomore album Rapture; the title track from her 1988 album Giving You the Best That I Got; and “I Apologize” from the 1994 album Rhythm of Love. She took a ten-year break after that from recording music in order to concentrate on raising her two boys.
She secured a recording contract with Blue Note Records in March 2004. My Everything, her debut album under the deal, was made available in September 2004. She remains a Blue Note artist as of 2012, and her upcoming Only Forever album is scheduled to arrive in October. The album’s lead single is “Lately,” a reworking of a Tyrese Gibson song from the late 1990s.
Baker already has five platinum albums and one gold album by the year 2017, in addition to eight Grammy Awards. Baker announced her retirement in January 2017, but she didn’t come out of it until 2018.
